Want to know why we love Sandals Grande St. Lucian? Sandals Grande St. Lucian is one of our all time favorite Sandals properties.  You can’t go wrong with choosing this resort, from unique accommodations like overwater bungalows to lively entertainment and plenty of land and water activities, not to mention the white sand and clear blue water, this resort really has it all.  And, the staff is amazing- always going out of their way to offer assistance or just smile and say hello.

And the negatives… The long trip from the airport is quite rough for those of us who get car sick!  It’s nearly two hours by shuttle, so we recommend the ferry or helicopter if you can.  Other than that, I struggle to find any negatives.  We really love this resort.

GETTING TO SANDALS GRANDE ST. LUCIA

Sandals St Lucia Map with labels

Sandals Grande St Lucian Resort, and both other Sandals Resorts, are located in the north of the island, while the main airport, Hewanorra International Airport is located at the southern end of the island.  This is the main airport for arrivals and departures, but there is another airport, George F. L. Charles Airport, on the island that mostly services small interisland flights.

All bookings include free shuttle transfer to and from either the airport or another sandals property.  So, booking a private transfer is not required, but you may want to.

The drive runs along the east coast, then across the central mountainous area, and finally up the west coast.  The drive across the island is rough for anyone who gets car sick.  I get it, took medicine, and still felt that I was nearly going to throw up.  Everyone I’ve shuttled with has felt sick on the ride, just varying degrees of sickness.  It is rough enough that I now either do the helicopter or ferry and just know that added expense will be part of the trip.

Fast Track Service at Hewanorra International Airport- $50

Similar to Club Mobay in Jamaica, this service allows you access to the short fast track lane for customs and immigration as well as a personal representative that will meet you at the entrance to the arrivals hall and guide you through the customs and immigration process. This could save you a half hour to an hour depending on the number of arriving flights.

Car Sickness
I get car sick, so I come prepared and know the tricks.  But, nearly everyone I’ve been around has gotten some form of it here with the winding mountainous roads.  Take it seriously and come prepared, and you’ll be okay.   Over years of travel I’ve learned these tips work best(at least for me) to avoid carsickness: sit near the front, carry a vomit bag(just in case), suck on ginger candy/chew ginger gum, and keep your eyes on the road like you are driving,

There are 3 options for getting from the airport to Sandals- by road, ferry, or helicopter.

Sandals Shuttle

Sandals provides a shuttle bus from Hewanorra Airport.  Anyone who gets car sick may want to bring medications as the roads are small, mountainous, and winding

  • Free
  • 1- 1 ½ hrs

Private Car Transfer

You can book through Sandals or an independent company.  Takes a similar amount of time as the shuttle, but with ac, possibly less motion sickness, and snacks and beverages usually included

  • +/- $100
  • 1-1 ½ hrs

Helicopter

A short 15 min flight from the airport in the south to the one up north, and then a 15 min taxi from George F.L. Charles Airport.  But there are only around 4 trips made per hour, so you may not save quite so much time because of the wait for the helicopter.  St. Lucia Helicopters

Tip:  the helicopter normally runs through the middle of the island, but for the return trip only, you can book the scenic trip for only $15, and will be flown along the west coast with views of many of the popular sights, including the pitons.

  • +/- $200
  • 45 min-1 hr

Ferry

A fun option to see the island from the water.  It will take a little longer than the other options, but snacks, drinks, and gorgeous views are included.  Fun To See Ferry

  • $140-$175
  • 2 hrs

SANDALS GRANDE ST LUCIAN RESTAURANTS

Sandals Grande St.Lucian has some of the best dining options of any of the Sandals Resorts we’ve been to- and we’ve been to a lot!  They have all the favorite regular spots, like Bayside, an Italian spot, Jerk Shack, a Pastry shop, and Sushi, plus a couple of specialties like Teppanyaki and Indian.   If food options are important to you, Sandals Grande St. Lucia is our favorite resort for food.

While we loved the surf and turf at Gordons- which everyone raves about.  Bombay was our surprise favorite spot for dinner.  The Aloo Gobhi was amazing!

Soy is always a favorite spot that we visit for appetizer rolls nearly every night, and it never disappoints.

We also love Kimonos.  It’s always a fun night at a teppanyaki restaurant.  They put on a fun show, and the food is typical teppanyaki food- and delicious!

Information is updated regularly for planning purposes, but please refer to the app when on property for the most up to date opening and closing times

Our surprise favorite spot at Sandals Grande St Lucia.  After an interesting trip to India, I’ve felt that I don’t like Indian food, but I was willing to give it a try.  The Butter Chicken always gets rave reviews, and it was good, but the Aloo Gobi was AMAZING- as was everything.  Even if you don’t think you like Indian food, give it a try!

Soy

  • What to expect:  Sushi Bar
  • Dress code: Resort Casual Dress
  • Dining: Air-conditioned indoor dining

Soy is about an every other night spot for us since we love sushi.  They keep the rolls at just 4 pieces per roll, so perfect for appetizers and trying lots of things!  We often pop in for a couple of rolls before our dinner reservation.

This is a fun spot to hang out, grab a beer, and play bar games.  It’s especially fun to meet up with friends or couples you’ve met for an end of the day hang out.

WHAT DOES THE DRESS CODE MEAN

Resort casual

Where restaurants list “casual” they are fine with shorts and really any type of shirt/t-shirt. Swimwear should be covered though and you must still wear shoes.

Resort evening

In the more formal restaurants, shorts aren’t allowed. You’ll need to wear pants or dresses and dress shirts. No t-shirts, sleeveless shirts, tennis shoes, flip flops, or hats.

GETTING RESERVATIONS

You can’t make reservations before you arrive, so this should be the first thing on your agenda after arrival as many places book up quickly. Don’t worry, you will always find somewhere to eat, it just may not be your first pick.

Butler level

You can’t get reservations before you arrive. However, if you have butler service, you can include reservations you hope for and they will do their best. Always ask on arrival as well in case they haven’t looked into the reservations yet.

Club Level

Reservations can be booked in the club lounge.

Luxury Level

You can book at the culinary desk in the main lobby across from the front desk.

ROOM SERVICE

Room service is not available for luxury level rooms.

Club level rooms include a limited room service menu that’s available from 7 am-10 pm.

If you have a Butler Level Room, you can ask for anything available at Sandals Grande St Lucian and they will try to get it for you. Order in from one of the restaurants to enjoy a romantic dinner on your balcony.  When your butler is off duty, a limited room service menu is available 24hrs.  You will also have a breakfast door hanger if you’d like an early breakfast or coffee delivered to your room.

ENTERTAINMENT

This is the liveliest of the three properties in St. Lucia and definitely has plenty to do for a younger(and by younger, I mean 30s-40s) crowd looking to have fun.  However, there are plenty of quieter areas to escape the party of the main pool area.  We are not big partiers, but still prefer The Grande to other resorts here because we have the option of lively entertainment when we want it, but can easily escape it.

Weekly Activity Board at Sandals Grande St Lucian

Entertainment is always subject to change and the schedule isn’t posted online.   But, it rarely changes much.  Look on the app once on the property and it will show all the options for activities for the day. There are signs around the resort showing the entertainment for the week, and you can also ask for a printout of the activity schedule at the front desk.

The main themes for each night, as of our last visit in 2022:

  • Sunday:  Reggae Night
  • Monday:  Water and Fire Show
  • Tuesday:  Broadway
  • Wednesday:  Country Singer
  • Thursday:  Burlesque
  • Friday:  Love Hop/ Silent Disco Party
  • Saturday:  Beach Party

Our favorite activities are the silent disco and the foam party. They’re both always SO MUCH FUN!

Burlesque night at Sandals Grande St Lucian Entertainment
Kristin at Sandals Grande St Lucian foam party

There’s really no need to know exactly what’s going on before you arrive at Saint Lucia Sandals Grande. You don’t have to wear all white to the white party. And if you’re super concerned about it, just make sure to pack one white dress/shirt.

SANDALS GRANDE ST LUCIA ROOMS

Sandals Grande St Lucian rooms include two of the most popular categories at Sandals Resorts- the Over the Water Bungalows and the Rondovals.  At places like Sandals South Coast, we actually prefer the rondovals with the lagoon pool just off the patio.  But, here at The Grande, the Rondovals have a private pool area, but no lagoon pool, making the overwater bungalows win out for us.

But, this room in the Massade building is our favorite room if not splurging on an overwater bungalow.  It’s the perfect location near everything, close to the beach, but feels tucked away.

There are technically 3 levels of Sandals st lucia rooms from “luxury” up to “butler” that each include different services.

Luxury

Luxury is the base level, but really most things are included at all levels at Sandals.  The only things luxury level rooms miss out on are the club lounge(a separate room for check-in, games, snacks, and making dinner reservations).  Luxury level can check with the front desk for anything you need, and making dinner reservations is done with the culinary desk.   The biggest drawback is that room service isn’t included at the luxury level.

Club

This room category is the mid-range level and includes concierge services, access to the club lounge, and room service. The club concierge will assist you with making dinner reservations, as well as reservations for the spa and tours.

Learn more about Sandals Club Level Service Here.

Butler

This is the full-service room category. No, it’s not that an individual butler is always ready to serve you 24/7. But, they will bring things to you, prepare coolers and chairs at the beach for you, drop off snacks, draw baths, etc. They’re nice to have, but if I’m being completely honest, it’s not such a pain to walk 1 minute to Josephines for a sweet treat, walk the short trip to the bar, or draw my own bath.

The biggest benefit of the butler is making dinner reservations and reserving beach chairs for you. Sometimes it’s hard to get into places or get a chair in a prime spot with shade, but the butlers can usually make it happen. Butlers are not an “add-on” service, but are included with certain rooms.

Learn more about Sandals Butler Service Here.

Requesting a Specific Room

This is always a request and never guaranteed. You must call the 1800 number to put in the request. I’ve found it’s best to mention the location you prefer rather than a specific room number – like the third floor further from the bar…etc. That way if your specific room number is unavailable, they know what you’re looking for and can try to accommodate you.

St Lucia Sandals Grande Rondovals

There are Rondovals on either side of the property with the East Side being on the slightly quieter side of the property, but the West Side is closer to Watersports and Pigeon Island.

You can’t choose the side, but you can always request a specific room number. Just remember that it is just a request. Don’t be disappointed no matter the room you get because they will all be wonderful.

BUTLERS

Butlers are a wonderful addition to your vacation, but we personally don’t feel that they are essential.  We enjoy having a butler when one is included, but we book based on our room preference, not whether or not it includes butler service.

The overwater bungalows offer a slightly more personalized butler service as those butlers do not serve as many rooms allowing for more dedication to each guest.

If you want to learn all about Sandals Butler service, including ideas on what to ask for and what to expect, make sure to check out our full Sandals Butler Service post here.

WHO DO I TIP?

As always, bring more than you think you’ll need just in case.  There always ends up being an extra guide or assistant on excursions, or an unexpected cab ride that wasn’t planned for.

Most importantly, no one on the Sandals staff is allowed to take a tip except Butlers and Spa attendants.  They can be fired for accepting a tip, so please just don’t try.  Airport shuttle drivers(even the included “Sandals” shuttle) and any tour operators are not Sandals staff, so they can be tipped.

  • Fast Track attendants: This is a separate service but many at Sandals use it – $15-20
  • Red cap at airport: $2-5 (depending on # of bags – at least $2/bag)
  • Shuttle Driver:  $10-$20 each way
  • Private Driver:  $20-$40 each way
  • Helicopter Pilot:  $20-50 each way
  • Excursion guides and drivers: $5-20 per person depending on how long, involved, or personalized the excursion is.
  • Spa Attendants: +/-20%, but keep in mind that a 12.5% gratuity is automatically calculated into the bill (double check your bill to be sure before you leave a tip).
  • Butlers: Tip as you see fit at the end of your stay. Many bring thank you cards and place the tip in those before they leave: $20-30 per butler per shift
  • Overwater Butlers: Tip as you see fit at the end of your stay. Many bring thank you cards and place the tip in those before they leave: $50-100 per butler per shift – mainland butlers on average get $20/day x 6 rooms = $120, so with overwater butlers who only have 2 rooms, $60 would be a similar daily tip.
  • Cabana butlers: You can rent a cabana for a day which comes with a butler to care for you at the cabana – they will bring you drinks, and food, and try to meet any needs you have while there – an average tip would be $20-50

SANDALS ST LUCIA BEACH AND OCEAN

Sandals Grande St Lucian Beach facing Pigeon Island

We think it’s the best beach of the Sandals properties in St Lucia.  It’s a long stretch of sand along a calm bay with beautiful views of Pigeon Island.  Because of the protected bay, the water is typically calm and most days are “green flag” days meaning that watersports are available.

There’s decent snorkeling along the gazebo on site, and the snorkel boat takes you over to the area off Pigeon Island- with quite a bit of nice coral heads and colorful fish.

Coral underwater from Snorkeling trip at Sandals Grande St Lucian Resort
Sandals Grande St. Lucian beach and water facing south

If you’re looking for the Sandals beach in St Lucia, this one is it, in our opinion.  La Toc is nice, but the water is a bit rough, and Halcyon’s water is murkier.  Sandals Grande St Lucian has that calm blue water with white sand!

SANDALS GRANDE ST LUCIA EXCURSIONS

The Grande, as Sandals Grande St. Lucian is commonly known, is located to the north of the island, but many of the most popular excursions are actually in the south of the island.  Since the road between Sandals Grande St. Lucian and the Soufriere area is winding and slow, most excursions will include a boat trip each way.  Having done it by land and water, the boat is absolutely the way to go.

Kristin at the top of Gros Piton Hike St Lucia
Kristin in Mud Baths at Sapphire Falls St Lucia

The most popular St. Lucia Sandals excursions seem to be:

  • JJ’s Speedboat/ Soufriere Experience
  • Gros Piton Hike(it’s challenging though)
  • Sunset Catamaran Cruise

Not specifically an excursion, but you can- and should- walk over to Pigeon Island.  It’s just next door to sandals, so you can walk down the beach to get to the entrance.  There are fort ruins, good snorkeling, and hikes up to the top for amazing views.  I think it’s a can’t miss if you’re staying at Sandals Grande St. Lucian.

SANDALS GRANDE ST LUCIAN GROUNDS

The grounds are mostly focused around the beach.  Similar to Sandals Montego Bay, this is a beach forward resort with some lush greenery, but mostly manicured lawns offering unobstructed views of the ocean.

Outdoor seating and fire pit at Sandals Grande St Lucian
Hammock at Sandals Grande St Lucian

The buildings are all larger 3-4 story buildings, as opposed to the more cottage style buildings at Halcyon.  We do miss some of the lush foliage here, but it would obstruct more of those amazing ocean views.

There are plenty of hammocks, swings, and even hanging beds throughout the property and lots of outdoor games to play.

WATER AND LAND SPORTS

Sandals Grande St Lucian Watersports Area

Sandals Grande St.Lucia has more water sport options and more green flag days than the other two Sandals in St. Lucia.  From nice snorkeling just off the beach, to waterskiing and paddleboarding around the bay, the watersports here can’t be beat.

As far as land sports, there’s not quite as much room to spread out like at some of the other resorts, but there are nice tennis courts and plenty of land games spread out around the property.

POOLS AND HOT TUBS

Main Pool

Main Pool at Sandals Grande St Lucian

This is where the party is every day.  It’s a shallower pool centered around the beach bar with activities throughout the day including games and our favorite- the Foam Party.

Main Pool Lagoon

Lagoon Pool at Sandals Grande St Lucian

Off to the side of the main pool, past some dense foliage, this quieter spot is great for floating and relaxing.  There’s even a small lagoon river surrounded by lots of tropical plants with a waterfall.  This is where we spent most of our pool floating time.

Lagoon Pool

The Lagoon pool is the pool connecting all of the swim up suites.  It’s between the Massade, Rodney Bay, and Monchy Buildings.  It’s quite large and quiet, but seems to mostly be used by swim up room guests.

Lover’s Pool

Sunset Pool at Sandals Grande St Lucian

Located near the end of the property by the Overwater Bungalows, this is another quieter option to relax along the beach.  With its location further from the main buildings and bars, it gets less traffic, but is beachfront.

OTHER AMENITIES

Fitness Center & Classes

24/7 Gym with lots of cardio and weight equipment. The gym does actually get quite a bit of use in the morning – people must be trying to work off all of the food and drinks before slipping into bathing suits for the day!

There are several fitness classes available as well, but I’ve not tried any. Maybe on some trip, I will find the motivation.

Red Lane Spa

Again, the spa isn’t really my thing.  But, I’ve heard nothing but great reviews about all of their services.  So, if you’re looking for a romantic couples massage or some specialty pampering, this is your place.

Don’t forget- the spa attendants CAN be tipped!

PREPARING FOR YOUR TRIP

Packing

Everyone is always concerned about what to wear. No need to stress about it – keep it simple.

Women

  • Daytime – bathing suit, sundress, beach sandals.
  • Evening – A resort dress is better than a sundress but more casual than a cocktail dress (but, you will see all sorts and no one stands out), nicer sandals (some wear fancier sandals/flip flops, and others wear heels – just make sure to wear some that are easy to walk in sand. You won’t HAVE to walk on the beach in the evening, but it’s much easier not to worry about not having the right shoes on) We see lots of wedges and espadrilles, which are a perfect mix of fancy and easy to walk on the beach with.

Men

  • Daytime – swim shorts, lightweight shirt, sandals.
  • Evening – linen/lightweight pants & shorts (a few restaurants require long pants), polo or button-down lightweight shirt, boat shoes.

Necessary items:

  • Large plastic bag – for wet clothes when coming home
  • Baggies – they always come in handy on trips
  • Swimsuit in carry-on to hit the beach even for if the room isn’t ready
  • Sunblock
  • Cash for tips
  • Thank you cards for butler (optional)
  • Bug spray – I think they keep up on keeping the grounds sprayed, but I always bring just in case

Things many recommend that we didn’t find necessary:

  • Towel clips – towels can tuck into spots on chairs
  • Metal straws – Sandals use paper, but they don’t bother us.
  • Yeti large drink cups to keep your drinks frozen all day – never used mine, or perhaps I just drank my drinks quite fast.

In Room Toiletries

Toiletries at Sandals South Coast

There is a hair dryer, shampoo, conditioner, bath bomb, lotion, soap, nail file, and q-tips. These are all good quality and larger size so there’s no need to pack your own, even for girls like me with curly tangly hair.

Floats

We always bring our own easily packable hammock style floats.  There are a few of the large yellow floating circles spread out along the beach area, but they are often taken.  Some swim-up rooms have their own floats, but they are large and heavy and not good to carry out to the ocean.

OUR OPINION

If we are choosing between the three Sandals Resorts in St. Lucia, we will choose Sandals Grande St. Lucian every time.  The vibe is fun, but not overly wild.  The beach is the nicest of the three with calm water.  There are plenty of great restaurants to choose from, and we love having hiking trails and snorkeling right at our doorstep.  You really can’t go wrong with Sandals Grande St. Lucian.  And, if you want to visit the other properties on the island, there’s an included shuttle.
